This Saturday the book will take me to a new record convention in Lewisville, Texas. Lewisville was the site of the Dallas Pop Festival (which had a much longer official name). The event took place August 30-September 1, 1969, following Woodstock by two weeks, and drew approximately 100,000 people to a large open area near the Dallas International Speedway. I was lucky enough to be able to attend with a number of my friends. There was a considerable list of performers, including Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, Santana, and B.B. King, among many others. In 2010 -- bit of a delay here -- the event earned a state historical marker. Besides the main stage there was a free stage near a camping area, and I've always heard that Jimi Hendrix showed up there and played-- but I didn't see him there. Interesting inclusions in the festival lineup were jazz star Herbie Mann and also the Incredible String Band, a Scottish psychedelic folk group whose lineup included Robin Williamson.
